Staying Safe on the Job: Workplace Safety Tips for Temporary Employees

As a temporary employee on assignment, you thrive at working in new environments. You enjoy learning how to use new equipment, technology, tools and machines. You’re highly adaptable and comfortable with change.

You probably also realize how important it is to stay vigilant and safe on the job. And that starts with taking common-sense precautions.

Whether you work in a warehouse, office or anything in-between, keep these practical tips in mind to prevent accidents or injuries on the job:

Prevent Ergonomics Injuries

If you spend the bulk of your day seated at a desk and working on a computer, protect yourself from common strains and injuries related to posture and repetitive movement:

  1. Adjust your equipment (chairs, keyboards, mouse location, etc.) so that it’s comfortable to use. If you’re on assignment and working with unfamiliar equipment, ask your supervisor to demonstrate key adjustability features.
  2. Keep your feet on the floor. Reduce pain and discomfort by NOT crossing your legs while you work, and by lowering your seat so that your heels are on the ground.
  3. Use document holders to reduce neck strain and muscle imbalance caused by repeatedly looking down at the desk and back at a computer screen.

Protect Yourself from Fall Risks

Fall hazards are present in virtually every work environment. To reduce the risks of accident or injury, be aware of the places that falls that are most likely to occur (courtesy of the Occupational Safety & Health Administration):

  • Falls from ladders
  • Falls down stairs
  • Falls from a roof, roof opening or a fragile roof surface
  • Falls from scaffolding or structural steel
  • Falls through a floor opening

Avoid Common Sources of Slips and Trips

Spills, wet floors and disorganized work areas all have one thing in common: they increase the risk of accidents. Keep yourself (and co-workers) safe on the job by:

  • Keeping floors as clean and dry as possible.
  • Wearing appropriate waterproof foot gear in areas where wet processes are used.
  • Maintaining a neat work area by storing tools and materials appropriately when not in use.
  • Keeping aisles, passageways and exits clear of obstructions and potential trip hazards.
